The inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex is by definition impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED). Having episodes of impotence is typically not concerning. Feeling stressed, tired, or ingesting too much alcohol, it may be difficult to get an erection. Most men can get an erection most of time that they are sexually aroused, and episodes of impotence are temporary. When impotence is ongoing it may cause stress, relationship problems or affect self-confidence. Erectile dysfunction can occur at any age; however, it is more common with an increase age. Approximately fifty percent of men age forty to seventy have ED. Seventy percent of men aged seventy and above have ED.
The brain, hormones, psychological response, nerves, muscles and blood vessels create the complex system that stimulates male sexual arousal. Physical symptoms related to a medical diagnosis are the most common reasons for erectile dysfunction. Heart disease, clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure, metabolic and endocrine syndromes such as diabetes, and being overweight are the most common conditions associated with impotence. These common conditions are typically a result of; reduced blood flow to penis, diseases which affect the nerves going to the penis (for ex, multiple sclerosis, a stroke, and diabetes), hormonal causes such as low testosterone, trauma or injury to the nerves of the penis and/or side effects to certain medications such as antidepressants, heart and stomach medications.
Mental health problems such as depression, stress and anxiety can cause or worsen impotence. When the brain become sexually excited it is a result of triggering physical events that result in an erection. Depression, anxiety, fatigue and relationship problems due to failing communication can cause lack of brain stimulation therefore resulting in impotence. A combination of physical and psychological issues can cause impotence for example, when taking a heart medication that prevents a heart attack the side effect of the medication is impotence. This side effects forces a decision to choose between not being able to have sex and not having a heart attack. The stress of this decision causes feelings of anxiety that makes getting an erection even more difficult.
Too Much Visual Stimulation
One of the newest reasons for erectile dysfunction is over sensory stimulation and increased dopamine production that is induced by watching stimulating images online. Normally dopamine is slowly secreted with a touch or a loving word to stimulate the male brain to achieve an erection. When watching or looking at stimulating images, the brain immediately secretes large levels of dopamine. The next time the male attempts to achieve an erection he will need the same level of dopamine as the last to feel satisfied. More and more men are needing visual stimulation to get or maintain an erection. This is affecting the success of many relationship as the other partner may not want pornography included in their lifestyle.
